Personal Reflective Writing –

thoughts and feelings questions.’

How to: Structure your essay.

Introduction
  • Explain what you are going to write about.
  • Briefly sum up what each paragraph is going to be about (before, during and after the event).

Paragraph 1
  • This should deal with what happened BEFORE the event.
  • Remember to include your thoughts and feelings.
  • Add some reflection as well – how you were feeling at the time and what you think about it now/what you’ve learnt from it.

Paragraph 2
  • This should deal with what happened DURING the event.
  • Remember to include your thoughts and feelings.
  • Add some reflection as well – how you were feeling at the time and what you think about it now/what you’ve learnt from it.

Paragraph 3
  • This should deal with what happened AFTER the event.
  • Remember to include your thoughts and feelings.
  • Add some reflection as well – how you were feeling at the time and what you think about it now/what you’ve learnt from it.

Conclusion
  • Your conclusion should briefly sum up what you’ve written about.
  • You should include a lot of reflection here: What you’ve learnt from the experience.
  • Remember, it should always be something positive. If you are writing about a time that you know you were in the wrong (fighting etc) then explain what you have learnt from the experience in depth (eg. Fighting doesn’t solve anything and it actually made the situation worse). You may have to slightly exaggerate here if you feel that you haven’t learnt anything positive!
